Turtles, dolphins and reefs on the southern Red Sea
Marsa Alam sits on the southern Red Sea coast, about 270 km from Hurghada. It is less built up, with resorts spread along the shore, open bays and healthy reefs that draw people who want to dive or snorkel at a slower pace.
North of Marsa Alam, Abu Dabbab bay is known for its seagrass meadows, where green turtles come to feed. Dugongs have also been seen here, although sightings have become rare.
To the south, Samadai Reef, known as Dolphin House, is a protected area where spinner dolphins rest. Access is regulated, with roped-off swimming zones and a cap on daily visitors [verify].
Inland and further south lies Wadi el Gemal National Park, with acacia valleys, gazelles and ancient mining routes. It makes a good contrast to days at sea, especially around sunset.
Five days leave room for several boat trips and a desert outing. If you are coming from a Nile tour, Marsa Alam is about 4 to 5 hours by road from Luxor and Aswan [verify].
Marsa Alam International Airport, about 60 km north of town, has direct flights from several European cities, mainly in season [verify]. From Hurghada it is about 270 km along the coast road, 3 to 4 hours.
